Jorge Portela & the Tournament
The 20th Annual Jorge Portela Memorial Give-or-Take An Inch, Half-Ass Fishing & Diving Tournament is on June 17, 2017. Registration for this event closes on June 9, 2017. Our tournament originated in 1994 from a friendly bet amongst Jorge’s friends as to who could catch more fish: the anglers or the divers? Unfortunately, in 1997 our good friend Jorge lost his battle against cancer. At that time, the name was officially changed to the Jorge Portela Memorial, Give or take an inch, Half Ass Fishing and Dive tournament.
In a change from prior years, the captain’s meeting will be held at the Key Biscayne Yacht Club on Thursday June 15th from 6:30pm-8:30pm. The fish fry will still be held at the Key Biscayne Beach Club on June 17th starting at 6:00pm.
Over the years, some of the rules have changed, the number of participants has increased, the boats have become more beautiful, and the top prize has changed, but the spirit of the tournament has not! This tournament is to honor Jorge for his commitment to family and friends and for his enthusiasm for life, good fishing as well as a good party!
This year’s tournament marks the 20th year of Jorge’s passing. We know that he will be in everyone’s heart and mind that day! We will miss you Jorge!
